What makes specialized risks require a different approach, and how can reinsurance generate higher-value solutions for clients?

Alejandro Rebolledo, Chief Commercial Officer of Argentum Re, explains how the growing complexity of exposures, limited available statistical data, and the need for highly customized hedging structures mean that the true challenge lies not merely in transferring risk, but in designing solutions capable of responding when they are needed most.

Specialized risks require a distinct approach because they cannot be evaluated solely through traditional statistical models. They typically combine low frequency with high severity, necessitating an in-depth analysis of the operation, actual exposure, and the potential impact of an event—going far beyond the mere application of a rate.

Furthermore, these types of risks rely on highly customized coverage. In lines such as D&O, cyber, energy, or political risk, true value lies in the drafting of terms and conditions, the definition of coverages and exclusions, and the clarity of the contract in the event of a claim.

Added to this is the fact that local market capacity is often insufficient to absorb complex or large-scale exposures, making access to the international reinsurance market essential.

A specialized risk requires someone who speaks both languages: that of the local operation—with its regulations, companies, and market customs—and that of the underwriter providing the capital from ten thousand kilometers away, who has perhaps fifteen minutes to decide whether the file is worth reviewing. Argentum Re operates at this intersection, with a presence in Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, among others.

In this context, reinsurance creates value not only by providing capacity but also by designing bespoke solutions, structuring efficient programs, optimizing risk transfer, improving coverage terms, and offering technical support for both placement and claims management. It also helps insurers strengthen their balance sheets and free up capital for sustainable growth.
